The Ford Explorer needs no introduction from us; it’s a long-running, familiar face in the SUV segment, made popular by a dependable build, comfy, spacious cabin, and versatility. The three-row SUV is deployed as a family cruiser and a police cruiser, trusted by law enforcement and parents alike to withstand felons or toddlers. The Explorer gets a surprisingly satisfying turbocharged powertrain, offering a good towing capacity for the segment. The Explorer also comes standard with a Class III Towing Package, which includes a hitch, trailer sway control, and a wiring harness. The Ford SUV is still fresh off last year’s refresh, but continues to innovate this year with the new Ford Explorer Tremor. This off-road alternative to the base Explorer comes with all-terrain tires, a lifted suspension, and a limited-slip rear differential, all built to help you handle most off-road situations. We’ll preview everything you need to know about the new Ford Explorer, from the safety rating to the towing capacity. For the most part, the Explorer comes with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. If you’d like some extra power, a turbocharged 3.0-liter engine is available on the Ford Explorer ST or Platinum, getting 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The extra hundred horsepower is noticeable, especially when accelerating, helping the Explorer hustle from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds. AFord-s usual 10-speed automatic is standard on the Explorer. RWD is standard, but AWD is available for some extra stability. THe Explorer can tow up to 5,000 lbs with the larger powertrain, which should be enough to haul mid-size boats in the summer. The four-cylinder is the more efficient choice though, getting 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
The new Ford Explorer has three rows of seating with an extra 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk. Folding the rear row gives you 47.9 cubic feet of total cargo volume in the cabin, with up to 87.8 cubic feet of total cargo space. You’ll find it available in six trim levels, including the newly added Tremor:
The V-6 engine comes standard on the ST, while it’s optional on the Platinum. If you’re looking for an Explorer with the base powertrain, the Active is a great option, getting heated seats, a power liftgate, and a handful of other amenities that make driving a bit more enjoyable. The ST-Line gets a 360-degree camera system, B&O speakers, and contrast-stitched seats. The Tremor gets the extra off-road features we highlighted above, while the Platinum is more luxurious, with heated, ventilated, and massaging leather seats. The Explorer gets a 13.2-inch LCD touchscreen no matter which trim level you select. The screen, located in the center of the dashboard, runs the Ford Digital Experience platform, giving you access to Google and Amazon applications. Of course, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both come standard. The Explorer can stream or browse as long as you’re parked. You’ll find USB ports throughout the cabin, with up to three 12-volt power sockets scattered across the cabin. Most models also feature a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen unit, delivering premium audio quality. Of course, the Explorer is a family vehicle first and foremost, as evidenced by its five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and its Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. Standard safety features include automated emergency braking, lane keeping and blind spot monitoring.
The Explorer delivers sharp style, plenty of features, and a roomy cabin designed to suit most families. If you’d like to see how your kids take to the new Ford Explorer, come test drive the Ford SUV for sale in OKC!
