The Ford Maverick fills a unique niche in the pickup truck market. It’s one of the smallest trucks on the market, but its compact size makes it more maneuverable and helpful in tight environments. Of course, the smaller size also helps keep costs down, making the Maverick one of the most affordable new trucks on the market. As the Maverick enters a new production cycle, a performance-oriented model joins the lineup: the Ford Maverick Lobo. It features a more powerful turbo engine, paddle shifters, a lower suspension, and a variety of other performance-oriented features. The Maverick doesn’t stop there, though, with the rest of the lineup getting a styling refresh with new headlamps, bumpers, grille, and wheel designs. On the interior, you’ll find a larger infotainment display with wireless smartphone integration. All told, the Maverick is a perfect pickup truck for folks who don’t need to tow heavier cargo. It’s well-loved by Ford enthusiasts and critics alike, earning a perfect 10/10 from Car and Driver, plus a spot on their 10Best Trucks list. The Maverick has two powertrain options to choose from. The base model features a hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 191 horsepower. It pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). For an extra kick of power, there’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 250 horsepower. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. AWD comes standard on the gas powertrain, but is an option on the hybrid model, which offers standard FWD. If you opt for the Lobo trim level, it adopts a sport truck design with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but features a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, improved brakes, and a low-slung suspension. You’ll want to opt for the optional Tow Package for serious hauling, as it boosts your capacity from 2,000 to 4,000 lbs. The bed can support a payload of 1,500 lbs. The hybrid powertrain makes the Maverick one of the most fuel-efficient trucks available, achieving 42 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. While every Maverick benefits from some extra technology and a new look, the XLT offers more practicality with a 2K trailer hitch receiver and a 4-pin connector. The Lariat offers additional amenities, including heated seats, mirrors, and a steering wheel, as well as a 360-degree camera system and a wireless phone charger. If you’re planning to take your Maverick off-road, we recommend the Tremor, which adds skid plates, a rear drive unit look, and an off-road-tuned suspension.
